Feeding and Storage
How often should I feed my dog?
We recommend feeding your dog twice per day. Once in the morning and again in the evening allows for proper digestion of food and doesn't put your dog into a "starvation" mode that might occur when feeding only one time per day. We recommend feeding puppies 6 months and younger three times per day. Dogs this age require a steady stream of nutrition to support healthy growth.
How much do I feed?
That's the great part about Your Pet Chef - we remove all of the guess work by delivering your food ready to go! Your dog's meals will be packaged by day so simply defrost and serve.
How long can I store the food?
Our food is made with 100% human grade ingredients. It will keep in the freezer for about 60 days, just like proteins you might purchase at your local supermarket.
How do I feed the food?
All of our food is delivered frozen. To serve, defrost in your dog's serving bowl overnight in the refrigerator for about 10-12 hours. This will leave the food bars soft, but still cold. Some dogs don't like cold food so their owners will microwave the food for about 20 seconds to warm it up. Do what works best for you. We have found that while our dogs are enjoying their breakfast, we put their food bars in a bowl in the refrigerator for the evening meal. We do the same during the evening meal. This system works well for many of our customers too.
Ingredients and Preparation
Where do you source your ingredients?
All of our ingredients come from restaurant supply houses. We use only human grade ingredients. So that chicken breast that you might order from your local bistro is the same protein we use in making your dog's food. We pick up our ingredients and prepare food each week. This means we don't have product stored in our freezers waiting for orders. The only food in our freezers by Friday is the food we feed our dogs! Who, by the way, eat all of the leftovers!
Are all of your ingredients sourced locally?
Yes! We have been able to source the majority of our ingredients in the Midwest. We only use USA ingredients. We do not include any ingredients from China or other countries.
How is the food prepared?
Following our recipes created with veterinarian approval, we puree all of the ingredients in a food processor. We then take what we call "batter" and spoon it into our food molds. We cover each mold with a sheet of parchment paper and then move it immediately to the freezer. Food is frozen over night, packaged by order and then returned to the freezer awaiting shipment. Each batch of food takes about 10 minutes to complete.
What is the consistency of the food?
Great question. Our food is unique in that we don't add any chemicals or additives to help our food bars keep their shape. When defrosted, they simply return to their "batter" form. This batter is very similar to cake batter but a bit thicker and lumpier.
What type of food do you prepare?
We prepare a raw diet for the majority of our clients. We also offer lightly baked bars for dogs that either don't like raw or it doesn't agree with their digestive systems. We believe in a raw diet as it is the closest to the natural, wild diet our beloved dogs once enjoyed. We think a high protein, low carbohyrate diet is essential to healthy, happy living.
How do I order food?
You can place an order for 1 week of food here or you can send us an email at and let us know how many weeks of food you would like. Once we deliver the first order, we can discuss getting you on automatic reorder which means we'll set up a regular delivery at the decided upon interval. If you live in the Chicagoland area, we will deliver the food directly to your home and stock your freezer if you'd like. If you live outside of this area, we will ship freeze dried product to you with re-hydration instructions. We split the freight cost so if your order costs $7 to ship, we will charge you $3.50.
My dog is allergic to chicken. How can i be sure that my food does not contain any of this protein?
Thanks for asking that question. We create a profile for every one of our clients where we include all of the relevant information about each dog. Several of our client's dogs have sensitivities to various proteins, vegetables, and fruits. We list these sensitivities and prepare the food without them. We constantly update this profile with feedback we receive. Perhaps your dog doesn't like a certain fish or other ingredient. We list that so we don't make that recipe again. Our mission is to make the healthiest food that your dog will love each and every meal.
