Mr. Big is a 12 year old pug. He lives a great life with his mom in Chicago. We have been making meals for Mr. Big about 3 years ago. He lost about 3-4 lbs. during the first year bringing him to his optimal weight. He’s had fabulous yearly checkups. This year, his mom noticed he had started to move around a bit slower and asked the vet about it. He was diagnosed with arthritis and was put on pain meds. We talked about other ways to help ease his pain. We modified his diet plan to include these arthritis pain fighting ingredients. He will now have a two pronged approach to his pain management. We’ll be able to check in on Mr. Big each month when we make his food deliveries. We’ll continue to post updates.(Photo-The Fabulous Mr. Big and Your Pet Chef, Lisa Hennessy: photo courtesy of Chicago Party Animals)
We make meals for all kinds and ages of dogs. Several of our four legged customers have entered into their senior years. We have enhanced our standard meal plans to include several natural ingredients to help reduce inflammation that can arthritis pain. Some of those ingredients include:
Fish – Many vets recommend adding fish oil to your dog’s diet to help ease arthritis pain. The Omega 3’s found in the oil help lubricate joints. We’ve added fish oil to our dogs’ diets for many years and provided you keep rotating the brands, it’s a great supplement that also aids in a shiny coat and smooth, flake free skin. Brand rotation is key; your dog’s body can become immune to the same brand over time. It’s very similar to folks who suffer with seasonal allergies. Switching up the over the counter remedies keeps the watery eyes and runny nose at bay. Some dogs don’t like the taste of the fish oil. They will not eat the capsules or will pick through their food, leaving any bits that might have the oil on them. We have found that adding 1-2 ounces of fresh fish to our meals helps provide the added Omega 3’s while blending the fish taste.
Ginger – Ginger had many health benefits. Not only does it aid in reducing inflammation, it can also calm an upset stomach and has been proven to help shrink cancerous tumors. We prefer to add freshly chopped ginger into our meals, but ground ginger will also do the trick.
Turmeric – Many people add turmeric to their dog’s diets to help prevent cancer. It also can prevent/reduce lumps found on your dog’s body. Some dogs really don’t like the taste of turmeric, so we try to add just enough to our meals.
Celery – We use celery in our meals each week for its many benefits including cancer prevention and immune system strengthening. It aids in reducing arthritis pain by acting as a diuretic, reducing uric acid crystals that may build up around the joints. Its anti-inflammatory properties help decrease swelling around the joints.
Zucchini – Another ingredient that is great for so many reasons. It’s low in calories, helps fight cancer, and boosts the immune system. Zucchini is packed with beta-carotene and Vitamin C which help reduce swelling, thereby reducing arthritis pain.
