February is American Heart Month and we’ve decided that it should go to the dogs! This week we’re going to share tips to help your hound get heart smart. We’ll focus on food and movement to help your dog feel his best and they might help you too!
Day 2 - In our Food Tips, we’ll focus on Beef and Beef Liver. For our Movement Tips, we’ll talk about taking a walk with your dog.
Food Tips: Beef and Beef Liver – While beef and beef liver contain more calories and fat
than say chicken or turkey, beef and beef liver are very low in sodium. If balanced properly with other proteins, beef and beef liver can be a great addition to a heart smart. For example, beef and beef liver have just 19 mgs of sodium per serving. Compare this to turkey at 426, chicken at not bad at 36.
Movement Tips: Go for a walk with your dog without your phone. Here are some tips:
Ok, maybe you need to have your phone for emergencies, but keep it in your pocket.
Really being present with your dog during the walk. Being aware of your surroundings is so important these days, especially for those in urban areas. I recently had a friend who was walking her dogs before work. Her neighbor was also out and told her a coyote was following her – imagine! She was not on her phone and was talking with her dogs. She was able to get home without the coyote getting much closer.
It’s a great bonding time with your dogs. I often chat with my dogs during our walks. And I don’t really care if people think I’m crazy. I just chat about what I’m seeing or what they are doing.
It’s great exercise for you and your dog. And frankly, I like to see what’s new in my neighborhood (so maybe I’m nosy). Ha!
The old saying – A tired dog is a happy dog – could not be more true. Here’s a great article highlighting the benefits of walking your dog.
