Our Real Eats for Rover series continues today with Natural Enrichments. Some of our four legged clients have special conditions that require additional ingredients in their meal plans. Our goal is to use natural supplements in these cases. We’ve found that many of the common additives we use can help with several different conditions. Here are some of the most common ones:
Coconut oil – Many people add this to their dog’s diet at home, but we can add it during the blending process to simplify meal time. Coconut oil is great to keep your dog’s skin flake free and his coat shiny. It can increase your dog’s energy, helping him to lose weight. It improves your dog’s digestive system so more nutrients from his food are absorbed. Some dogs don’t like the taste so capsules are available at your local market.
Ginger – Ginger is great to help decrease stomach upset. It also helps reduce inflammation which is why we use it in our Arthritis Formula Meal Plan.
Flax Seed – Flax seed can be used in many forms – seeds, ground, or oil. Flax contains Omega 3’s and 6’s which are great to improve skin and coat quality. It can also help fight cancer.
Aloe Vera – We include the fleshy part of the plant in our food making. Aloe is great in reducing inflammation and allergic reactions in your dog’s body. It’s also great in to help reduce flakes on your dog’s skin. You can use small amounts on cuts and scratches on your dog’s body to promote healing.
Turmeric – Turmeric is helpful to your dog’s body for many reasons: It can help fight or reduce cancer, it promotes liver and heart health, it helps with upset stomachs, and can reduce pain. We use a small amount when making our meal plans as it can change the taste of the food. It does turn the food a red/orange color.
We hope that you have found this information helpful. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s entry – how we get our food and treats to be so colorful. If you’d like us to make your dog his own customized meal plan, start here. Thank you!
