In Part 4 of our series, No Thanks! Rover Would Rather: Eat Natural Enrichments not Nothing Stuffing, we’ll look at fillers commonly added to pet foods. As we reviewed in our Natural Enrichments blog last week, we do add enrichments to our meals to create special diets. These additives include coconut oil, turmeric, and ginger. The large commercial pet food brands use many additives as filler that can potentially be harmful to your dog. I’m specifically talking about grains and gluten.
In a recent study, Natural News researched the top pet food brands and they found that 35% of all pet foods add rice in some form and 28% add wheat in some form. Grains and gluten:
Are added as an inexpensive filler and useless calories.
Can cause allergies or skin blemishes.
Can cause digestive distress, as grains and gluten are not part of a dog’s natural diet and
therefore are very difficult for them to process.
Why not leave these ingredients out? They provide no health benefit to dogs and actually can be harmful in many cases. I’ve helped so many dogs that ate commercial brands of dog food and then switched to our food. The skin irritation is now gone, the constant scratching is now over, and the gleam in their eyes has returned as they feel better than ever! Get rid of those grains and glutens!
