Our final entry in this series provides some helpful hints about taking your dog to a dog camp or a doggy hotel. The vacation you planned might not be dog friendly or may be too far away to bring your pup. Here are some tips to make your time apart enjoyable for everyone. Here goes:
If possible, leave your pup at home with a stay at home care giver. This should include someone letting your pup out to potty at least 3 times per day. I feel that having someone stay at your home is a great way to keep some normalcy in your pup’s life without you there.
You can also choose to leave your dog with a friend that she is familiar with. This would be a “Stacay for your Puppay”. Ha!
There are lots of places you can board your dog. I sell products to a few of them locally here in Chicago and I do have a favorite. Pawsitively Heaven Pet Resort provides round the clock care for your pet while she’s in her own “suite”. These suites come with TV’s and you can bring you dog’s own bed too. They let the dogs out several times per day and interact with them often. If I were to leave town and was not able to bring my dogs with me, I would choose Pawsitively Heaven. My criteria for this selection are:
I never smell urine or anything bad when I deliver there.
Everyone is very happy and they enjoy every dog.
Every kennel is clean all the time. Some kennels have doors for your pup to access a fenced yard.
You should create a bag of items for your pup that includes: pre-packaged food by serving, any necessary medicines, treats, her bowl, leash, toys, bed, blanket, and any items that might help her feel more comfortable.
You could also send your dog to Dog Camp. There are many organizations that have fun activities for your pup to enjoy while you are away. We have several in our area. They look like lots of fun for your pup and maybe, just maybe, your pup won’t miss you as much!
