This week we’re asking – “Can my dog eat that?” Our focus will be on fruits and vegetables that are coming into season over the couple of weeks. These items will most likely be on sale and easily available for you to freshen up your pup’s diet.
Today we tackle – Leeks and Red Onions!
These members of the onion family are a Big NO when it comes to your pup. Members of the Allium family (mostly comprised of various onions) contain a toxin that can have these adverse effects on your dog:
Irritation in the mouth, causing excessive drooling or even nausea.
Abdominal pain or vomiting.
The toxin causes red blood cells to rupture, decreasing the amount of oxygen carried throughout your dog’s body and to his organs.
While cases of mortality as a result of eating leeks or red onions are rare, they will cause your pup extreme gastrointestinal discomfort. It’s just not worth it!
